Review: Film review – Calendar Girls (2003) – Its a very English story and its a very English film. The very definition of an ensemble cast, the cream of British middle aged actresses have been gathered for this touching film. Helen Mirren and Julie Walters are the main leads and do a great job.

Walters plays the wife of a man who dies of cancer and Mirren her best friend. After he dies they decide they want to do something to help the hospital that treated him and hit upon the idea of creating a calendar. The twist being that they and other members of the local WI (women’s institute) will pose nude in the photos to be used. The calendar becomes an overnight success leading to first national and then international publicity. The result of which is this movie.

There’s a mixture of comedy and pathos in this film and all the cast do a great job telling what is a moving real life story of small things that touch many people.
