Review:  Film review – City of Angels (1998) – This film might not be to everyone’s taste, there’s some fairly hokey American religious nonsense at the core of it. However if you’re prepared to swallow that particular pill the film itself isn’t bad. This is mainly because Meg Ryan is a good enough actress to carry even this film. She’s at the zenith of her beauty here and that’s not to be underestimated.

Ryan plays a surgeon who though good at her job one day loses a patient, through no fault of her own, on the operating table. This knocks her confidence and makes her question what she’s doing. Meanwhile Nicholas Cage who plays an angel that has come to collect the man that dies, sees her and begins to fall in love with her.

As I say the film is more than a little hokey and if you’re an atheist like me you’ll feel some discomfort watching it. Set that aside however and there is some merit in it. Be warned it has one of the cruellest endings I’ve seen in a Hollywood film.
