Review: Film review – Eyes Wide Shut (1999) – To begin with, the opening scene of the movie. If I had the chance to get Nicole Kidman to pose naked for me (I’m an artist) I would jump at the chance, so my compliments to Mr Kubric for a great opening. Nicole has a body to die for and I have to say that came as something of a surprise to me.

I have read some people describe this movie as Kubrick’s masterpiece but I’m afraid I can’t go along with that, there are flaws. The primary one is that it is about twenty minutes too long. I understand Stanley was still working on it when he died and it may be he would have resolved this before release if he had had a chance. As well as too long the plot seems rather slow also contributing to that feeling that everything is taking too long.

So why did I give it 8/10? Well, because in the end it is a good film and almost a great film. Kubrick has generated his usual atmosphere with ease and this combined with good performances from both Nicole and Tom make some of the film very slick and atmospheric. I also love the bravery of the almost pornographic orgy scenes which make you wish you too had a mask and could walk around the mansion observing everything yourself (or perhaps you’d prefer to take part!).

In summary: A little slow and a little long, but brave. A good movie well worth watching if you haven’t seen it
