Review: Film review – Pearl Harbor (2001) – The title suggests this is a film about the events of Pearl Harbor during the Second World War but in reality it’s a couple of love stories pinned to that story to provide action and drama. Starring Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnett this is a stylish well filmed movie. Why have I rated it four out of ten I hear you ask? Well take a look at the final paragraph.

Two young boys grow up to be American pilots together. When the Second World War breaks out one of them volunteers to go to the UK and fight against the Germans while the other remains behind. Before Affleck goes to the UK however he falls in love but has to leave her behind. While he is gone his friend and the girl are both assigned to Pearl Harbor, she as a nurse, he as a pilot. When they receive the news that he is dead they slowly come together and form a relationship. All the while this is going on the Japanese are planning a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor..

Having chosen Pearl Harbor as the basis for a film the Writer (Randall Wallace) and the director (Michael Bay) have, to be frank, made a pigs ear out of it. Clumsy, Plodding and over romanticised the film is a mess. The four out of ten is for the special effects (won an Oscar), cinematography and sound (won an Oscar) which are in places good. I’ll be honest, you’ll do well to make it to the end.
