Review: Film review – Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – This film is a romantic comedy with a nice blend of both. Mainly a two hander between Meg Ryan (as Annie Reed) and Tom Hanks (playing Sam Baldwin) but well supported by Bill Pullman (as Annie’s fiance Walter), Rosie O’Donnell (as Annie’s friend Becky) and Ross Malinger (as Jonah Baldwin).

Sam, a Chicago architect who loses his wife to cancer moves to Seattle with his son Jonah. Eighteen months after her death he is still mourning so Jonah rings a radio talk show and persuades Sam to go on air. He describes how much he misses his wife and feels better for it. A few days later hundreds of letters arrive from women wanting to meet him. Meanwhile Annie also hears the show and is mysteriously drawn to Sam even though she is supposedly happily engaged to her fiance. Living on opposite sides of America any relationship seems unlikely but with the help of Jonah things begin to happen.

Heavily influenced by the fifties film An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr the film references it in several places even taking the famous Empire State Building scene as the backdrop for the conclusion (with a different outcome of course).

Funny moments include the conversation around the dinner table about An Affair to Remember with Sam describing it as a chick flick. Also, Sam asking his friend what tiramisu is in case he has to do it when he goes dating.

Hanks and Ryan have an excellent chemistry which makes every film they make together just work and this one is no exception. A classic based on a classic.
