Review: Film review РThe Accused (1988) РTo begin with this film is based on a true story. Be prepared for some tough viewing. Towards the end there are scenes of strong sexual violence.

This film had a profound effect on me when I first saw it many years ago. For the first time I felt I could understand the effect rape has on its victims. Jodie Foster plays the lead role and does a brilliant job winning an Oscar for her work.

Essentially the main character is gang raped in a bar late at night but having reported it and gone to court her lawyer plea bargains the case before she has her day in court. The main culprits getting away with light sentences. Eventually her lawyer comes to the conclusion there is another way to fight the case and the film goes on to follow this process to the brutal ending when the rape is described in court and we see it.

The feeling is of revulsion, its hard to watch because you think you know what’s coming but in truth its worse than you could have imagined. The fact that its based on a true story Best Stylus for iPad,¬†makes this even worse. You’ll want to look away, don’t.

I didn’t give this movie ten out of ten because its perfect or a masterpiece I gave it ten out of ten because its ground breaking and shows rape in a true light. Almost everyone knows someone who has been raped, this film helps the fight against it.
