Review: Film review – The Alamo (1960) – John Wayne, Richard Widmark and Laurence Harvey star in this fantastic telling of the story of The Alamo. Set in the 1800’s it tells the story of how a few hundred men from Texas defended the mission at The Alamo from a Mexican army led by General Santa Anna. Wayne plays the part of Davy Crockett, Widmark Jim Bowie and Harvey Travis.

Santa Anna has crossed the border into Texas (as we know it now) intent on marching North and and seizing control of it, while some Texians are intent on stopping him and declaring a Texan State. The small mission at The Alamo becomes the scene of a great battle as the Texians try to delay Santa Anna while reinforcements can be gathered elsewhere. The battle became famous because of the brutality of Santa Anna in wiping out the garrison and this contributed to the rise of an army which would later defeat him at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836.

The historical accuracy of the film is questionable to say the least and John Waynes political view prevails throughout but that said its still a great story, well told and all three of the leads put in excellent performances. Its a school boys vision of the world and I well remember wanting a Bowie knife for years after I first saw it (along with the tasselled jacket Alan Ladd wore in Shane). I’d have given it 10/10 but knocked two points off for the lack of historical accuracy and overt Republican political views.
