Review: Film review – The Holiday (2006) – Described as a romantic comedy its more romance than comedy to be honest. It centres around two women Amanda Woods, played by Cameron Diaz and Iris Simpkins, played by Kate Winslet. Amanda is a Los Angeles film trailer editor who works too hard and as a result breaks up with her partner. Iris is a society column editor for The Daily Telegraph who loves a man who doesn’t love her. Just prior to Christmas they both decide to get away from their lives and sign up to a house swap website. As a result Amanda ends up in Iris’s cottage in Sussex and Iris in Amanda’s plush house in LA.

Amanda meets Iris’s brother Graham, played by Jude Law and they instantly sleep together thinking they’ll never see each other again. Meanwhile Iris meets Arthur Abbott, played by Eli Wallach, an elderly neighbour who she quickly becomes friends with, additionally she also meets Miles Dumont, played by Jack Black, a music composer. The two week Christmas and New Year break roll on with the romance slowly building.

Its not a work of genius, hence the seven, but it is a slightly superior romantic comedy mainly because of the cast which was carefully thought about and as a result works well. Personally Jack Black doesn’t quite work for me but I’ll forgive them that. As I say not particularly funny but pleasant romance and I guess for the full affect you should catch it at Christmas time.
